چکیده

Lower mantle seismic scatterers are often interpreted in terms of subducted basaltic crust, which should contain free-silica phases that are seismically fast. However, free-silica phases are unstable in a peridotite lower mantle, as they react with ferropericlase (magnesiowustite) to form silicate perovskite. Nonetheless, conservative estimates and recent measurements of diffusion coefficients in silicate perovskite suggest that free-silica phases may persist as polycrystalline armored relics in lower mantle peridotite at length scales equivalent to those observed for seismic scatterers. Simple numerical simulations also suggest that polycrystalline silica may persist within subducted metabasalts. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Constraining the geometries of small-scale heterogeneities: A case study from the Mariana region

A new array-based method for seismic waveform data is developed to detect small-scale heterogeneities in the mantle and constrain their possible locations and sizes. Detecting small-scale heterogeneities using scattered waves has been challenging because scattered phases usually suffer from low signal-to-noise ratios, and determining the shapes of such heterogeneities is even more difficult bec...

Strong, Multi-Scale Heterogeneity in Earth's Lowermost Mantle.

The core mantle boundary (CMB) separates Earth's liquid iron outer core from the solid but slowly convecting mantle. The detailed structure and dynamics of the mantle within ~300 km of this interface remain enigmatic: it is a complex region, which exhibits thermal, compositional and phase-related heterogeneity, isolated pockets of partial melt and strong variations in seismic velocity and aniso...

The post-stishovite phase transition in hydrous alumina-bearing SiO2 in the lower mantle of the earth.

Silica is the most abundant oxide component in the Earth mantle by weight, and stishovite, the rutile-structured (P4(2)/mnm) high-pressure phase with silica in six coordination by oxygen, is one of the main constituents of the basaltic layer of subducting slabs. It may also be present as a free phase in the lower mantle and at the core-mantle boundary. Pure stishovite undergoes a displacive pha...

Modes of Slab Behavior: from the Transition Zone to the Mid-lower Mantle

Subducting slabs may exhibit buckling instabilities and consequent folding behavior in the mantle transition zone, accompanied by temporal variations in dip angle, plate velocity, and trench retreat. Governing parameters include both viscous (rheological) and buoyancy (thermopetrological) forces. Numerical experiments suggest that many parameter sets lead to slab deflection at the base of the t...
